Advanced nursing practice clinical and/or administrative leadership roles are analyzed. Current advanced practice and leadership issues in diverse healthcare settings are explored. Characteristics, roles, and practices of effective inter-professional teams are explored. The impact of collaboration and inter-professionalism on organizational leadership and clinical outcomes is emphasized.

This course focuses on the ethical and legal principles that impact healthcare systems. Special emphasis will be placed on applied clinical ethics and legal decision-making from a personal and organizational perspective.

Human resource leadership, management practices, and factors that affect organizational performance in healthcare are explored. Students analyze and apply concepts of organizational and leadership behavior and theories in healthcare. Advancing a culture of excellence through building and leading diverse collaborative teams and utilizing innovative human resource practices are emphasized.

The effects of legal and regulatory processes on healthcare systems, nursing practice, and patient outcomes are examined. Healthcare systems policy design, implementation and evaluation are analyzed. Strategies for policy advocacy as well as legislative and regulatory issues are explored.

Population focused disease prevention and health promotion concepts are analyzed. Influences of social, biological, cultural, and geographic variables on health outcomes are explored. Concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion are examined with a focus on improving population health outcomes.

Students complete a final scholarly master’s project while demonstrating achievement of program outcomes. Students identify an issue worthy of inquiry relevant to advanced practice nursing. Students integrate didactic learning, promote innovative thinking, and consider new potential solutions to a practice and/or system issue. Students critique and integrate evidence-based literature to develop and present the scholarly project.

Quality and safety strategies, theories, and methods to improve health outcomes are explored. Concepts of healthcare quality and safety are analyzed with a focus on patient and population health outcomes. The role of advanced practice nurses in leading quality and safety initiatives within organizations is examined.

Terminology, tools, and methods of financial management in healthcare organizations and systems are examined. Concepts critical to making sound business and financial decisions in an ever-changing healthcare economic climate are explored.

This is an introduction of health care informatics for healthcare practitioners. It is a project based course that emphasizes the requirements of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Education Requirements for Advance Practice Nurses in Doctoral Programs. These requirements emphasize the analysis and assessment of healthcare informatics tools in clinical practice, research, education, and patient education.

An administrative practicum experience is supervised by practice experts in nursing and healthcare administration. Competencies essential for the role of the nurse administrator are demonstrated and refined. Students complete their practicum hours with a practice expert within a healthcare facility and experience the role of the leader/director/administrator. This course will be the last, or second to last course in the program depending on the student’s plan of study. During the practicum course, students complete 135 practice hours: 45 direct with preceptor, 90 indirect (non-precepted time conference, leadership meetings, health policy event, leadership activities, lit searches, etc.). Students will work with their preceptor to identify a need within the healthcare system and develop a project during the practicum course that improves the issue.
