This is an introduction of health care informatics for healthcare practitioners. It is a project based course that emphasizes the requirements of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Education Requirements for Advance Practice Nurses in Doctoral Programs. These requirements emphasize the analysis and assessment of healthcare informatics tools in clinical practice, research, education, and patient education.

An administrative practicum experience is supervised by practice experts in nursing and healthcare administration. Competencies essential for the role of the nurse administrator are demonstrated and refined. Students complete their practicum hours with a practice expert within a healthcare facility and experience the role of the leader/director/administrator. This course will be the last, or second to last course in the program depending on the student’s plan of study. During the practicum course, students complete 135 practice hours: 45 direct with preceptor, 90 indirect (non-precepted time conference, leadership meetings, health policy event, leadership activities, lit searches, etc.). Students will work with their preceptor to identify a need within the healthcare system and develop a project during the practicum course that improves the issue.
